introduction

It’s that time of year when all colour junkies are waiting with bated breath to see the reveal of the Colour of the new year, and it JUST DROPPED!

The Colour of the Year for 2022 is…insert drum roll here…Very Peri

According to Pantone, this new colour encourages personal inventiveness, creativity and vision through the blue tones combined with the violet-red undertone, and personally, I am loving it!

How do they decide on an all-influencing colour for the next 365 days? The experts at Pantone search worldwide for colour influences. Inspiration is taken from all fields of design, new artists, popular travel destinations, the film industry, fashion, social media, and even new tech, effects, materials, etc can have an impact on the chosen colour.

The selected colour is not chosen lightly, as it has been known to be influential in all design industries and has a big impact on brands, marketing and purchasing decisions in industries such as home decor, fashion and industrial design. This means it’s time to chuck out all of your yellow and grey cushions and throw blankets… they’re so last year!

Pantone has been selecting annual colours since 2000, but it was only in 2007 that it started having any influence. Now, Pantone offers special colour combination palettes to align with the winning hue! It has also grown with the rise of social media and gets plenty of coverage as soon as it’s announced (figured I’d join the masses with this article).
Here’s the big question you may be asking, how does one colour affect me? Boatloads of brands begin designing and producing products in the Colour of the Year. So whether you’re on the production or consumption side of the scale, you’ll be seeing Very Peri a lot for the next 12 months!

Here’s a quick recap of the last 5 years of colour, along with the explanation Pantone gave for each one:

The colour of 2022 symbolises the global transition as we come out of the intense isolation we’ve been in. Everything we do is changing, from our standards to the way we look at digital and how physical and digital aspects of life have merged.

After all of that, what do you think of the colour of 2022?
